Hampstead Hikers Club - Box Hill Autumn Summit 🍁

Few places near London capture the magic of autumn quite like Box Hill. As you climb the chalk paths rising above the Surrey Hills, the landscape unfurls into a painter’s palette - russet beeches, golden oaks, and the deep greens of yew and holly. The air carries a crisp edge, rich with the scent of leaf mulch and woodsmoke drifting from hidden cottages below. This is the North Downs at their most cinematic: sweeping escarpments, dramatic viewpoints, and paths that feel centuries old, walked by poets, naturalists, and wanderers seeking the same perspective you’ll find today.

What makes Box Hill special is its balance of effort and reward. The climb - steep in places, with steps that demand good boots - soon gives way to wide horizons where the Weald spreads endlessly south.
